Treadmill Training Helps Babies With Down Syndrome Walk Earlier

A new study from the University of Michigan says that treadmill training for just a minute a day can help the babies with down syndrome walk upto four or five times earlier than with the traditional physical therapy.They also stressed that Infants who do high intensity treadmill training may walk even earlier.

Children with Down syndrome have higher level of a hormone leptin which may contribute to higher risk of obesity, according to researchers at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Medicine.

More than 20 years ago, doctors at Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA performed a successful bone marrow transplant on a baby girl who was born without a thymus gland and was suffering from severe immune deficiency. It marked the first time a bone marrow transplant, rather than a thymic transplant, had been used to treat the genetic condition known as DiGeorge Syndrome (DGS).

Some Facts about Fetal Alcohol Syndrome

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) is a pattern of mental and physical defects which develops in some unborn babies when the mother drinks too much alcohol during pregnancy. A baby born with FAS may be seriously handicapped and require a lifetime of special care. Some babies with alcohol-related birth defects, including smaller body size, lower birth weight, and other impairments, do not have all of the classic FAS symptoms. These symptoms are sometimes referred to as Fetal Alcohol Effects (FAE). Researchers do not all agree on the precise distinctions between FAS and FAE cases.
